The question that changed everything
Something inside me went absolutely still. I remembered every Sunday Sally had been strangely quiet. Every comment Greg threw at her like a pebble, small enough to be dismissed, sharp enough to leave a mark. I thought about how she adjusted her sweater before sitting down. How she ordered the smallest portion before anyone else spoke. How her whole body braced itself every time her husband opened his mouth.
I didn’t scream, even though a part of me wanted to. I didn’t throw the cake at him, even though the image flashed through my mind with satisfying clarity. I didn’t call him what he was in front of my six-year-old granddaughter. Instead, I put down my fork, looked him straight in the eye, and asked him just one question.
“Greg, do you want Emmy to grow up and marry a man who makes fun of her body and controls what she eats?”
The atmosphere shifted in an instant. The smile vanished from her face with almost alarming speed. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She looked at Emmy, who was still frozen in her chair, chocolate frosting on her fork and tears in her eyes. “Answer me,” I repeated softly. “Would you want that for your daughter?”
